“Masterful work by Lois, I use my hands for work and more so for my craft in my downtime. As a blacksmith, over excretion of your striking arm can cause rips, strains and tears even with proper technique. After a number of months of ignoring the niggling pain in my hands I was unable to clench my fist let alone hold a hammer due to an "abnormal" build up of lactic acid in my hands coupled with the tightening of tendons around the thumb. Lois quickly located the problem areas and after 1 session I had regained complete use of my hands again. I would highly recommend Lois to anyone in need of a consultation and the professional treatments she has to offer. Very knowledgeable physiotherapist!”

What Is Tendinopathy?

Tendinopathy refers to a group of conditions affecting the tendons — the tough, fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones. Unlike sudden tears or ruptures, tendinopathy usually develops gradually due to overload or poor movement patterns. The result is pain, tenderness, and restricted function, particularly during or after activity.

At our Southampton physiotherapy clinic, we treat common forms of tendinopathy, including:

  • Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

  • Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow)

  • Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper’s Knee)

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

These conditions are often load-sensitive, meaning pain worsens with forceful or repetitive use of the tendon.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Tenderness at the tendon insertion point

  • Stiffness and aching in the morning or after rest

  • Discomfort during activity that eases once warmed up

  • Pain that returns or worsens after prolonged exertion

  • Reduced strength or grip (especially in elbow or shoulder tendons)

  • Mild swelling or thickening of the affected tendon

Why Early Intervention Matters

Early-stage tendinopathy can behave inconsistently — pain may disappear during activity, only to return hours later or become more severe on subsequent days. Without intervention, this pattern can lead to chronic degeneration, reduced tendon capacity, and more time away from activity.

Prompt physiotherapy helps restore the tendon's ability to tolerate load, prevent structural damage, and reduce the likelihood of long-term dysfunction.

Our Physiotherapy Approach to Tendon Recovery

1. Clinical Examination

Your initial session includes a structured examination:

  • Detailed discussion of training history or activity changes

  • Tendon palpation and provocative tests

  • Functional load assessment (e.g. hopping, gripping, squatting)

  • Posture and biomechanics review

We identify aggravating factors and determine whether the tendon is reactive (irritable) or degenerative (chronic), which guides the correct loading phase.

2. Targeted Rehabilitation Strategy

Your recovery will involve:

  • Eccentric Loading Exercises – A proven treatment method that stimulates tendon remodelling and builds load tolerance

  • Isometric Therapy – Ideal for initial pain relief and tendon activation

  • Soft Tissue and Deep Friction Massage – To improve blood flow and reduce sensitivity in chronic cases

  • Activity Modification Guidance – So you can remain active while protecting the tendon

  • Progressive Return to Sport or Work Routines – Building strength, control, and endurance without setbacks

We do not prescribe complete rest — our goal is safe, progressive movement that leads to true recovery.

Realistic Recovery Timelines

Tendon recovery isn’t instant. Most patients follow a phased programme:

  • Early-Stage Tendinopathy: 4–6 weeks

  • Persistent or Chronic Cases: 8–12+ weeks

  • Return-to-Performance programmes may extend longer, especially in high-load or athletic scenarios

We set manageable goals, track improvements, and adjust load or volume based on your progress.
